Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto marks Remembrance Day and Kristallnacht anniversary with Ellin Bessner

November 7, 2021 @ 4:00 pm

Via Zoom.

Just ahead of Remembrance Day 2021, and the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht, Canadian author and journalist Ellin Bessner brings the story of the 17,000 Canadians of Jewish faith who fought Hitler, won the Second World War and rescued the survivors of the Holocaust. Bessner is the host of The CJN Daily Podcast for The Canadian Jewish News, and the author of “Double Threat” by the University of Toronto Press. Her book paints a nuanced picture of Canada’s Jewish community and its contribution to the war effort, but also the discrimination and dangers faced by those who put on a uniform for their country. These Canadian troops faced a “double threat” because of their religion: not only if they should be captured by the Nazis but, as the author clearly points out, because of the widespread antisemitism they encountered at home in Canada, in the barracks and on the battlefield. This is an important chapter in Canadian history.

Bessner will be in conversation with Miriam Webb.
