Ellin brings ‘Double Threat’ to the residents of Kensington Place in Toronto

August 22, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT

As Canadian soldiers prepared to ship overseas from Nova Scotia ports during WWII, they didn’t leave without a warm send-off. And for the Jewish Canadians in uniform, the Jewish community in the Sydney, N.S. area went even further, with home cooked meals, Jewish holiday celebrations, and sometimes, wartime romances that turned into long-lasting marriages with the boys “from away”.  Ellin Bessner, the author of “Double Threat: Canadian Jews, the military and WWII”, shares some of these stories during her talk Aug. 22, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Kensington Place. Although she was too young to serve herself, special guest Evelyn Davis will talk about having to pluck a lot of chickens to help her family feed all these Jewish heroes some seventy years ago.
