Ellin visits the Richmond Hill United Church Men’s Breakfast on Saturday Oct. 13, 2018 9 a.m.
October 13 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am EDT
Intrepid traveller and Richmond Hill resident Bruce Rhodes speaks about his epic journey this past June to the Land of the Midnight Sun – the Norwegian archipelago known as Svalbard, halfway between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole. It is the site of the global seed vault, deep in the side of a mountain.
Bruce also paid a special visit to the grave of a Canadian Jewish airman located near Reykjavik in Iceland, and conducted a memorial service for him, due to his friendship with local author and journalist Ellin Bessner. Bessner’s book “Double Threat: Canadian Jews, the Military and WWII” tells the story of Hymie Steinberg, the oldest brother of comedian David Steinberg, and his service during WWII, and how he died in Iceland with his entire RCAF crew.
The Men’s Breakfasts are a time of fellowship and camaraderie. Cost is $10 / person, with net proceeds to the UCW. Please RSVP to Harry Ramsaran (firstname.lastname@example.org) by Thursday, October 11.
