Canada’s Hidden Heroines: the Jewish women who helped win the Second World War at home and in uniform

Coinciding with Remembrance Week, author and journalist Ellin Bessner speaks to the University Women’s Club of Toronto on Nov. 15, 2021 for a “Zoom” talk on The Untold Story of Canadian Jewish Women who helped win the Second World War.
Bessner is the author of Bessner is the author of “Double Threat”, published by the University of Toronto Press, about the contribution of Canada’s tiny wartime Jewish community to defeating the Nazis.will take a fascinating look at the Canadian Jewish heroines, both at home and at the front, who helped Canada win WWII, but whose contributions to history have never been properly recognized. “Meet” Bessner’s own great-aunt, Cpl. Daisy Lazare, along with Sgt. Miriam Freedman, S/O Rose Goodman and Pt. Esther (Bubis) Thorley, as well as the legions of Canadian Jewish women volunteers who raised funds, packed boxes, made sandwiches and even built the bombs.
