I had the honour of interviewing 99-year-old Toronto Jewish war veteran Lorne Winer in front of an audience at the Miles Nadal JCC on November 9, 2016, after the Royal Canadian Legion’s Wingate Branch commemorated Remembrance Day. Winer had recently been awarded the Legion d’honneur by the French government, in recognition of his service as part of the Allies’ Normandy landings in the summer of 1944 during the Second World War.
